Seriously being witty shouldn't be the main personality trait of every main heroine especially when it's established that both her and Zhiruo are both smart/prodigies in their own ways. I'm getting kind of sick of this singular trope actually of 'the peppy, witty girl is always the main love interest'. Her character is fleshed out, but the relationship between her and Wuji is practically gone which sucks considering the story arcs you could've built after the event in ep 22. Zhiruo barely gets much interaction anymore for being his secondary lover in fact she is barely more than a stranger. Once she hits she's unescapable which is kinda annoying because it cuts Zhiruo out of the picture way too hard. But in here Zhang Wuji's story contains several adventures with different people for a good bit, until Zhao Min. I don't have this problem in Legend because Guo Jing only really had one lover and the series was basically their adventures together. But Zhiruo gets sidetracked way too hard IMO for being the second, and even primary love interest for a bit, in a story where she's so important. So is Zhu'er and hell even the other Zhao is decent somehow. Lemme explain that I find the chemistry between him and Zhao Min to be good I also like how this story is a reverse "Legend of the Condor Heroes" in several ways. Now my one problem with this show is the romance. ![]() Hence why ep 16-22 are badass, you'll see. His power level is also much more established early on and he makes big leaps in progress, a lot like "Battle Through The Heavens" actually but even more extreme so when he beats someone it's cuz you know this boi is an actual unit. Let me explain, so in most things the protagonist is the centerpiece of every single arc, but, in his case he's a side character for a while and is forced to participate out of necessity not "because he's the hero". I love Zhang Wuji the actor is pretty good with his character overall as the hero and he's more convincing than Guo Jing because he isn't always smiling 24/7 he's actually semi-thoughtful and tactical and I love the way he's interwoven into the story. In fact I'd go so far as to say that even if you don't like this series go watch ep 16-22 just for the hype factor of Zhang Wuji which leads me to the next point. The action, okay, hear me out, so yes this show does have a lot of slow-mo in most episodes, BUT, there are fights where slow-mo is actually used stylistically/sparingly and the action in those is awesome. Characters are also surprisingly good and likable for the most part. It always moves along at a decent pace and has little dragging/filler although like Legend did, the last few episodes just fucking BLAZE through the plot. So I always found the political drama stuff in the Condor trilogy to be more watchable than others, NGL I get sick of seeing so much kowtowing to a guy who just sits on his throne and twiddles his thumbs in historical dramas so if you're sick of that too, this is a change of pace. Still a good show tho and a solid 7-10-8/10 for me :) if you have Prime or just go to YT. I hate the 'peppy, witty stereotype' plz end my life. TLDR: action really good in parts, story good, acting good, romance decent-good. You don't need any prior knowledge to watch either BTW. It's 50 episodes FFS it has enough length to tell its own story. I am also just grading this based off the show not the novel. So I didn't even know this existed because I figured they'd do the trilogies in order but I just happened to wander upon it on Prime searching for CDramas, win win. I have kinda been saving it but now it seems like a good time to move on after finishing the condor heroes series. I am looking for something with good action alongside the drama. ![]() He has many fans abroad as well, owing to the numerous adaptations of his works into films, television series, comics and video games. So I finished HSDSS after binging it on Amazon Prime and I'm considering going to watch Nirvana in Fire as everyone says it is the best thing ever.
